We got to see the Blade Runner Final Cut last night at the Ziegfeld Theatre.

Breathtaking.

Basically it's the directors cut but with the continuity, looping, and editing flaws smoothed out. They don't go and drop in all new scenes and for that I am thankful. Once that old Ladd Co. symbol came on the screen the audience began applauding. Then again when Sir Ridley Scott's name came up on the credits.

As the opening shot unfolded on the screen I felt a wave of new wonder come across me. I knew all the dialogue and the action beats, but somehow I was seeing this great film for the first time. A true rediscovery, even though I've enjoyed it for ages. But now realizing that I've never collectively enjoyed it, that is to say, with an audience. Sure everyone I know adores it, but the actual watching I've always been alone for. It was great to hear other people laugh at the same shit I've always laughed at by myself, mostly Rutger Hauer and the other replicants as they slowly become….emo.

The overall texture of the film was sublime, the layering especially jumps out at you in a big way. I think I even understood more of Harrison Fords muted performance, you can't help but be dwarfed by this megalopolis surrounding you, it works for the character. The film's relevancy still astounds me. It feels more and more like this fictionalized world is getting closer and closer. All the while I noticed Daryl Hannah and Sean Young were sparkling to look at back then and semingly affective actors, too bad plastic surgey and bad choices in film sidelined them.

So in short, a great film experience. Especially for the avid fan. Hopefully the screenings will go wide soon. Scott doesn't feel the need to fix what isn't broken, only correct what's out of synch. Too bad other rereleases can't follow the same path. I can't remember enjoying any film released this year as much.

I am eagerly awaiting the release of box set of doom, but would love to see this picture on the big screen.
